Unique fauna and flora in the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve
Nursery ponds and bird-watching in one of the richest estuaries of Europe.
The Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve in located in territory belonging to three different municipalities: Alcochete, Benavente ans Vila Franca de Xira.
Along the Estuary there are many interesting places for nature lovers, such as nursery ponds for typical species of clams, oysters, shrimp, lamprey, flounder, eel, bass, among many others.
Is if of extreme importance for the local ecosystem and it is capable of influencing some animal populations across all Europe, especially migratory birds. For instance, during some months, 25% of the total European population of Recurvirostra avosetta travels to the Tagus Estuary. Bird-watching entusiasts are sure to have a blast in the Reserve.It is also important to highlight the presence of great groups of flamingos in many parts of the estuary. The flocks are attracted by the strong presence of crustaceans, in nursery ponds and saltpans. Sometimes they can even be seen when crossing the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
