The Santa Justa’s Elevator, also known as "Elevador do Carmo", is one of the most interesting monuments of the historical center of Lisbon.

It was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsar and built in 1902. It was powered by steam until 1907, the year it started using electricity instead. Not even this "modernity" made it lose its grace.

Built with iron and enriched with filigree artworks, this monument has a Romantic Neo-Gothic design. The elevator itself connects the downtown with Bairro Alto and is 45 meters (147 feet) tall. At the top, visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the city center and river Tagus.

Every trip at Santa Justa’s Elevator costs 5 euros.
