Portugal is recognized as one of the best places in Europe to surf. Maybe you heard of the world record of the biggest wave ever, conquererd by American surfer Garret McNamara in Nazaré, or perhaps you saw on TV the world championship stage in Peniche. Anyway, be assured you have many waves to choose from.

If you are taking the first steps in the art of dominating the waves, we recommend two destinations just outside Lisbon. Carcavelos, on the north shore, is just a 25 minutes train ride from Lisbon. It’s a very big beach, with room for everyone.

On the south bank of Lisbon, you can reach Costa da Caparica by bus. It’s a 30 minutes trip and you will find lots of beaches, separated by rocky peers. Both in Caparica or Carcavelos, you will find local stores that can rent you boards and suits.

If you are an advanced surfer, you can try your luck on the west coast. In Ericeira - who claims to be the European capital of surf -, you will find rocky beaches that provide regular waves. There are a lot of schools there ready to give you lessons or rent the gear you need.

A bit further to the north, you will find Peniche. It’s an hour trip by car. You have many beaches and one of them - Supertubos - host the Portuguese Stage of the word championship. Expect big, hard waves. In Peniche and the beaches around, it’s easy to find all the help and gear you’ll need.

For the kite surfers, the place to go is Guincho, near Cascais. The beach offers strong winds and beautiful waves.

If you prefer to have a organized surfing trip, companies like Go Surf Lisboa can offer you various options.
