Experience the most typical Lisbon neighbourhood in Alfama

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon and contains many historical and cultural attractions. It is considered to be one of the most typical neighbourhoods of the city.

From the top of the St. Jorge’s Castle, all the way down to the Lisbon Cathedral’s walls, Alfama is a labyrinth slope of narrow streets, small squares, and nooks and corners that are sure to surprise and amaze you. Everywhere, from the restaurants, to the shops, you can ear, feel and live the Portuguese tune Fado.

The district is one of the best places to listen to the Portuguese song. Is is also the place to leave you breathless, with high lookouts that will, give you a whole new perspective of the city, such as the Miradouro of Santa Luzia, or the Miradouro das Portas do Sol (Gates on The Sun). In Alfama you can also visit the Museum of Decorative Arts.

Don’t miss the experience of talking to the locals and feel the heart of Lisbon ans the saudade pulsating on the streets. Also, visit the Lisbon Cathedral, the Convent of the Grace (Convento da Graça), St. Jorge's Castle, and the National Pantheon (in St. Engrácia’s Church), resting place of the most important Portuguese personalities, such as the Fado singer Amália Rodrigues, football legend Eusébio da Silva Ferreira or writers Almeida Garrett and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen.
